For this project, I was given the archetype of lingerie and challenged to reinterpret it through historical and cultural lenses. Researching the evolution of the lingerie industry, I was particularly inspired by the 1960s, a period of major innovation in materials and construction. I combined this with the bold silhouette of 1940s Zoot suits, garments deeply symbolic of resistance and power. The project resulted in five key looks that merge lingerie techniques with tailoring and fabrication. Look 1, a Zoot suit-inspired jumpsuit featuring lingerie-style contouring and shaping, with exaggerated balloon trousers. Look 2, an oversized men’s shirt paired with a mini shorts, mimicking 1960s underwear construction, complete with bra hook-and-eye closures, zigzag stitching, lace trim, and a matching wool bra. Look 3, classic tailored zoot trousers with a garter-style closure revealing a pink lingerie lining, paired with a bodysuit reinterpreted from a men’s tank top using lingerie contouring. Look 4, a zoot suit blazer featuring a corseted bonnet waist to exaggerate the shoulders and hips, styled with a cotton poplin bra lined with lace and closed with shirt buttons. Look 5, a T-shirt inspired by the zoot blazer silhouette, featuring oversized shoulders and corseted contour panels, paired with zoot-style shorts cut to 1960s underwear length and lined in pink.
Following the project, these looks were selected for an editorial shoot for the school magazine, Forty5. For the shoot, we explored the themes of masculinity, femininity, and the interplay between dressing and undressing, using styling and layering to further push the narrative. I took these pictures with analogue to further emphasize the magazine theme of resurgence.
